URINARY DYSFUNCTION

Research shows that urinary incontinence impacts 25 million Americans. Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. This is from a force such as a cough, sneeze or laugh termed stress incontinence or following a strong urge to void called urge incontinence.

Many women don't seek treatment because they view the leakage as a "normal" consequence to childbirth or aging OR no one brought to their attention options. I blame society for this misconception and lack of information. The shelves are stocked with products such as urinary pads for exercise or daily use, media talks about entering the "pee your pants club" as a mom or mature person, commercials advertise drugs or surgery as the best options for various bladde problems. And thank goodness there's options, right. But let me tell you about another that often hiding behind door number 3....physical therapy.

Wearing urinary pads or special underwear is great for now, but it doesn't get to the root of the problem. Incontinence is a symptom, not a disease. It means something in your system isn't functioning optimally.

The pelvic floor muscles are part of the system that controls continence (keeping pee out of your panties). If the pelvic floor muscles are under active and not able to create appropriate strength, you leak. On the flip side, if your muscles are over active and unable to move through their full excursion, you leak. That's why kegels ARE NOT always appropriate and may worsen your symptoms.

You're in luck and don't have to figure it out unsupported. Let's work through those leaks together.
